Former Punjab CM Beant Singh's killer gets life imprisonmentBy IndiaToday

A district court in Chandigarh has sentenced Jagtar Singh to life imprisonment in Beant Singh assassination case.

On August 31, 1995, the then chief minister of Punjab Beant Singh was killed in an explosion outside the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Punjab police employee Dilawar Singh had acted as a human bomb in the incident. The explosion had killed the CM and 17 others.

Jagtar Singh had showed no remorse for his deed and had explicitly said, "I have no regret for killing Beant Singh" in a letter to the court in January. He confessed his crime in this letter.

The Chandigarh court had held Jagtar Singh guilty on Friday.

The trial in the case had begun in 1995. Jagtar Singh had staged a daring escape from the Chandigarh jail in the year 2004 with his accomplices Jagtar Hawara and Paramjit Singh.
