Fil- Canadian drowns after rescuing son from strong currents

By Manila Bulletin

A Filipino Canadian died after saving his son from strong currents on Lake Chehalis in Canada.

Arnulf Salazar, 53, immediately dove into the lake when he noticed that his 10-year old son Zach, who has autism, was drowning.

Bystanders who heard the cries helped Salazar and reached out to grab the child after he pushed his son towards them, according to a report from ABS-CBN News.

The strong currents, however, started pulling and dragging Salazar down the lake.

“It was just too far for me to get him. It’s a big shock to us because it happened so fast and we never expected such a thing to happen on that day,” Zsalve Salazar, his daughter, told ABS CBN News.

She described Salazar as a kind and hardworking father who had always supported her dreams.

“He always wanted me to always do my best.. He was always my number one supporter,” the younger Salazar added.

The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Arnulf’s funeral expenses. Those who also want to help may go to this link: https://ca.gofundme.com/f/in-loving-memory-of-arnulf-salazar
