Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ‘retained the support of the board’ in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s dismal Premier League defeat against Burnley – the Clarets’ first win at Old Trafford since 1962.

Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez scored the decisive goals for Burnley either side of half time, and fan unrest was marked by passionate chanting from United fans against the club’s ownership, with many also walking out early and leaving visible swathes of empty seats.

Fans on social media also voiced their displeasure at Solskjaer, with #OleOut trending. Supporters questioned his ability as a manager and coach after what was another aimless performance from a patchwork team.

However, according to Sky Sports, United are ‘not even considering a managerial change’. That is despite this currently being their worst season in 31 years – not since the 1988/89 campaign has the club had as few points after 24 games of a league season. That resulted in an 11th place finish.

United have lost nine Premier League games so far this season, while Solskjaer has overseen 19 defeats in just 41 games since he took over from José Mourinho 13 months ago.

On Wednesday, the club missed another opportunity to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea, who dropped points earlier in the week. A Champions League place next season looks increasingly unlikely, while a Liverpool victory on Thursday night could see the leaders go 33 points ahead of their arch rivals, laying bare the enormous chasm that has grown between the two clubs.

But rather than pull the trigger, the Old Trafford hierarchy are determined to stick with the man they only handed a three-year contract to as recently as March.

United bosses are committed to a longer-term overhaul that began with the signings of Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire, as well as several departures. There appears to be belief in continuing the project as it is, with the club aware success will not be instant.
