Don’t treat Jammu and Kashmir as ‘enemy territory’, says Mehbooba MuftiBy Hindustan Times

Jammu and Kashmir can’t be treated as “enemy territory”, said Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday, reacting after she resigned as the state’s chief minister.

“We did not form this alliance for power. I submitted my resignation to the Governor and told him that we are not looking to explore any other alliance,” said Mufti in Srinagar.

“One can’t treat Jammu and Kashmir as enemy territory--muscular policy can’t succeed here,” she said, commenting after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended its alliance with Mufti’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The BJP said it was ending the alliance because security in the state was getting worse. “Terrorism, violence and radicalism have risen and the fundamental rights of citizens, including right to life and free speech, are in danger, it said.
