After raising their voice over the agrarian crisis and loan waiver over the past few months, the Opposition is all set to corner the government over these issues in the winter session of the state Assembly starting in Nagpur from Monday.

The Opposition is also likely to raise corruption charges against ministers, rise in crime rate and voice of dissent of elected representatives of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to corner the government.

The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders have been vocal about the distress among farmers. The NCP started Halla Bol march covering 160km in Vidarbha to draw attention to farmers’ crisis 10 days ago. They have touched upon delay in disbursement of loan waiver, dozens of deaths of farmers and farm labourers due to inhalation of poisonous insecticides, loss of cotton crop due to a pest attack, among others. The march will culminate in a massive rally in Nagpur on Tuesday. NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Gulab Nabi Azad will participate in the rally, which coincides with the 77the birthday of Pawar.

The Opposition will also bring up allegations of corruption against BJP ministers Prakash Mehta and Subhash Desai (against whom the Opposition had compelled the government to initiate action in the monsoon session held in August) and may insist on resignation of the two ministers.

Mehta is accused of granting additional floor space index (FSI) to a private developer by violating rules, which is believed to have cost the exchequer Rs500 crore. Desai was accused of flouting norms while allegedly denotifying around 12,000 hectares of MIDC Nashik land to favour private builders.

Moreover, the exit of senior BJP leader Nana Patole and his resignation from Lok Sabha may buoy the Opposition’s efforts to nail the Devendra Fadnavis government. Party’s Nagpur MLA Ashish Deshmukh’s letter to the chief minister raising question over its policies, too, may act as ammunition.

Although Fadnavis announced a loan waiver of Rs34,022 crore to be benefit 89 lakh farmers, the actual amount and number of beneficiaries are low. “There is no coordination among BJP ministers over such an important scheme. This has distressed farmers further,” said Dhananjay Munde, leader of Opposition in the legislative council.

They are also insisting on compensation to farmers affected by pink bollworm attack on their cotton crop and the farmers and farm labourers who died because of pesticide poisoning in Vidarbha region.

As witnessed in the earlier sessions, BJP’s ruling partner Shiv Sena, too, is expected to join the Opposition over farmers’ issues.
