The violence over the amended citizenship act in Delhidrew sharp reactions from US lawmakers with the mainstream media prominently reporting it along with the just-concluded visit of President Donald Trump, PTI reported.
Reacting to the violence, the House Foreign Affairs Committee said its Chairman Eliot Engel was "deeply troubled by the deaths from the communal violence in India." It said the right to protest is a key aspect in democracy, but they must remain peaceful and police must ensure the safety of all.
"I condemn attacks against Muslims in India, and reject violence, bigotry, and religious intolerance. The US State Department should too," Republican lawmaker Don Beyer tweeted.

The Aligarh Police has issued prohibitory notices to over 300 people, restricting their movement and warning them of action if there is any trouble in the city, which has seen violent clashes over the CAA, PTI reported.
Officials said the “red notices” were issued on Tuesday to 302 people in connection with the violence on Sunday, informing them about restriction on their movement.
The notices have been issued in connection with the violence in Upper Court locality on Sunday evening when women protesters were asked to vacate a sit-in site. The tension spilled over to Monday morning when clashes broke out between the anti-CAA protesters and the police in Jamalpur locality.

Rs 2 L Compensation to Families of Those Killed in Delhi Violence: Official
A compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be paid to the next of kin of the people who have died in the violence over the amended citizenship law in northeast Delhi, PTI reported quoting senior officials said on Wednesday.

"The Supreme Court Bar Association expresses concern about the law and order situation prevailing in Delhi and also about the wellbeing of citizens, their lives and their properties," it said in a statement.

The number of deaths following violence in northeast Delhi rose to 23 on Wednesday, 26 February, according to news agency ANI. 22 deaths were reported in Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and 1 death in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.
“So far we have treated 200 patients, 22 deaths took place. Majority of the patients have been discharged, 35 patients are still admitted with us,” Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital Sunil Kumar told ANI.

The death toll in northeast Delhi communal violence over the amended citizenship law rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to GTB Hospital authorities.
“Out of all the people that were brought to the hospital 189 are injured and 20 are dead,” said Sunil Kumar Gautam, Medical Superintendent at GTB Hospital.
SC to Not Expand Scope of Shaheen Bagh Case, Next Hearing on 23 March
Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will not expand the scope of Shaheen Bagh case since pleas on violence in northeast Delhi are being heard by the High Court.
The case has been adjourned to 23 March in view of the existing situation and no interim order has been passed for removal of protesters. SC said there is need for magnanimity and for situation to cool down before the issue is taken up.
“The problem is lack of professionalism of police. If this had been done before, this situation would not have risen," said Justice Joseph. SC said it has nothing against Delhi Police but is making remarks keeping in mind larger perspective.

The Delhi Minorities Commission on Tuesday appealed to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal for imposition of curfew in violence-affected areas, PTI reported.
In a letter to Baijal, DMC chairman Zafarul Islam Khan expressed apprehension that violence may escalate after departure of the visiting US president Donald Trump.
He also requested the Lt Governor to direct the police to check violence and take action against those involved in it.
Civil Rights Activists Go to Meet Kejriwal, Urge Him to Ensure Peace
A delegation of civil rights activists, including All India Progressive Women's Association Secretary Kavita Krishnan, on Tuesday went to meet Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence to submit an appeal to protect the people in the city from communal violence, PTI reported.
Over 100 activists, including Harsh Mander, Apoorvananad, Annie Raja, Yogendra Yadav, Shabnam Hashmi, and senior advocate Vrinda Grover came out with a statement in which they called upon "all authorities to perform their constitutionally mandated job of bringing the situation under control and restoring peace".

Violence Erupts in Delhi's Chand Bagh Area; Rioters Set Shops on Fire
Rioters set afire to shops and pelted stones in a fresh wave of violence on Tuesday evening in Chand Bagh area of northeast Delhi, PTI reported.
The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd in the area. Paramilitary forces have also been deployed to bring the situation under control.
Rioters also set a bakery and several fruits carts on fire.
Lucknow on Alert After Clashes in Delhi Over CAA
A high alert has been sounded in Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow following violent clashes over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in parts of Delhi, a police official said on Tuesday, 25 February.
Lucknow Police Commissioner Sujeet Pandey said additional force has been deployed in Ghantaghar area where women and others have been staging a protest against the CAA for the past one month.
"Though there is no report of people from other parts of the state reaching Lucknow, high alert has been sounded as a precautionary measure," Pandey was quoted as saying by PTI.

Police Conduct Flag March in Bhajanpura, Khureji Khas as Fresh Violence Erupts
The police conducted flag march in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura and Khureji Khas on Tuesday after the areas witnessed arson and stone pelting, according to PTI.
A battery shop was set on fire in Bhajanpura. The shop was vandalised and burnt batteries were strewn on the road.
Rakesh Kumar, a local, said the incident took place at around 3:30 pm.
Delhi Police Dismisses PTI Story on Shortage of Forces
The Delhi Police on Tuesday, 25 February, dismissed a story by news agency PTI titled ‘Shortage of forces led to violence aggravating: Delhi Police to MHA’ as “totally baseless, adding that no such information was given to Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Earlier, PTI reported that the Delhi Police told the MHA that it did not have adequate forces to immediately control the violence that hit parts of Delhi.
The non-availability of adequate forces was conveyed by Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik during his meeting with the top brass of the MHA, the report further said.

NGO Moves HC Seeking FIR, Arrest of Persons Involved in Northeast Delhi Violence
An NGO on Tuesday approached the Delhi High Court seeking registration of an FIR and arrest of persons involved in ongoing violence in North East Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, reports PTI.
The petition, which is likely to be mentioned before the high court, also seeks setting up of an SIT to inquire into the incident and compensation for those killed and injured in the violence.
It has also sought directions to the Centre for deployment of the Army to maintain law and order in the national capital and areas where the "communal attack on people are most ferocious".
