The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been tasked to investigate the killing of a former lady prosecutor in Cebu City.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra himself gave the order Friday, January 18, for the NBI to conduct the probe over the death of former Cebu City prosecutor Mary Ann Castro.

“I have immediately directed the NBI to investigate the ambush of prosecutor Mary Ann Castro and to identify the perpetrators at the soonest possible time,” Guevarra said.

Castro, 50, was ambushed by still unidentified assailants at around 9:53 p.m. Thursday along Escario St., Barangay Kabutao.

She was driving her yellow Nissan Juke when was fired upon by the suspects near the Cebu Park Lane.

The former prosecutor was still able to drive away but crashed into a fence of a construction site.

The victim was found to have sustained five gunshot wounds in the body and one in the neck.

According to news reports, Castro has been suspended three times including in January 2018 due to the legal case she was facing against her estranged husband Greco Sanchez.
