Next year’s Oscars race has found another contender in Bombshell, a new drama focused on the Fox News sexual misconduct scandal.

The film, directed by Austin Powers’s Jay Roach, stars Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron as Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly, the news hosts who accused Fox CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) of harassment.

Margot Robbie also appears in the film as a fictional Fox News worker.

Following the film’s first screening in Los Angeles, journalists are predicting the film will receive a heap of award nominations in the acting categories.

Awards Daily reports that Theron “disappears” into the part of Kelly and “owns the movie” with Variety calling her performance “remarkable”. The former deems the drama one of the best films of the year.

The New York Times compares the film to Vice, Adam McKay’s 2018 drama focused on Dick Cheney, which won Christian Bale an Oscar for Best Actor earlier this year.

Other films expected to compete at next year’s Oscars ceremony includes Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood and Martin Scorsese’s mob epic The Irishman.

Bombshell will be released in the UK on 24 January.
