Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad caught on camera mocking Donald TrumpBy Evening Standard

Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad have been caught on camera mocking Donald Trump.

The Russian and Syrian presidents were caught exchanging a joke about the US leader’s personality at a recent summit in Damascus.

On a visit to a Greek Orthodox church, the pair are seen discussing the biblical story of Saul’s conversion to Christianity, while on the road to Damascus.

The tale sees God make Saul blind after he persecuted Christians as a Pharisee, before he was cured and converted to another faith.

“If Trump had travelled on this road, it would fix him,” says Mr Assad in the video, tweeted by a Russian journalist.

As the two leaders laugh at the jibe, Mr Putin quips that Mr Assad should send an invite to Mr Trump, adding: “He’ll come.”

“I’m ready,” replies Mr Assad, prompting Mr Putin to say: “I’ll tell him”.

According to the Kremlin, the Russian president, an arch supporter of the Syrian government in the country’s ongoing civil war, visited Syria for a short-notice summit for talks on military tactics.

Mr Trump also appeared to be the centre of joke-filled gossip at a Buckingham Palace Nato reception last month.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s PM, and Emmanuel Macron, the French leader, were filmed huddled with Boris Johnson seemingly mocking the US president behind his back for holding a “40 minute press conference” on his visit to Britain.

“You just watched his team's jaws drop to the floor...", Mr Trudeau was seen saying.
