PM announces creation of CDS, says India has 'one nation, one constitution' after scrapping article 370By uniindia
New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced the setting up of the post of a ‘chief of defence staff’ to lead reforms in the armed forces.
Addressing the nation on 73rd Independence day, the PM defended the repealing of Article 370 and said after its abrogation, India has “one nation, one constitution” .
In his 90-minute speech, the PM said the law to ban the custom of ‘triple talaq’ had freed the lives of Muslim mothers and sisters from the shadow of constant fear.
Simultaneously, he warned the countrymen of “population explosion” posing a grave danger for coming generations.
Mr Modi also appealed to people to stop using ‘single-use plastic’, and make it a campaign on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi this October 2.
Speaking of the objective of making India a 5-trillion dollar economy in the next five years, the PM said the world looked at India as a big market, but it was time India also looked at the world as a market, and wished each of its districts became an export hub.
While not mentioning Pakistan by name , the PM said his government was taking steps to counter terrorism.
Bringing in a big reform in the armed forces., the PM announced the creation of the post of the chief of defence staff,
"India's forces are India's pride.
To further sharpen coordination between the forces, I want to announce a major decision from the Red Fort today.
India will have a Chief of Defence Staff - CDS.
This is going to make the forces even more effective," Prime Minister said in his Independence Day address .
He said many commissions had stressed the need for better coordination among the Air Force, Navy and Army.
He said the chief of defence staff would strengthen the efforts to modernise our armed forces.
On Parliament repealing Articles 370 and 35A, the PM said his new government achieved within 70 days what previous governments could not in 70 years.
Terming it as a realisation of the wish of Sardar Patel, he said,' Today, Indians can declare that they finally have “one nation, one constitution.'
To the opposition Congress which was opposing the repeal of the provision, he asked them that if they thought it was so crucial for the country, then why did they not make it permanent ?
On Jammu and Kashmir soon becoming a Union Territory, the PM said common people of J&K could now directly seek redress from New Delhi without any intermediaries.
