South Africa fixtures at the Rugby World Cup 2019: Possible route to the finalBy Evening Standard

Should they get out of their pool, South Africa could yet face Japan, Scotland or Ireland in the last eight of the Rugby World Cup.

A bonus point victory for the Springboks on Tuesday will see them through to the quarter-finals regardless of the result when New Zealand face Italy.

In all likelihood, the All Blacks will progress as pool winners ahead of South Africa.

That would put Rassie Erasmus’ side into a quarter-final against the Pool A winners -- possibly Japan.

Pool A remains uncertain, but the hosts have already beaten Ireland and will go into their final pool meeting with Scotland knowing victory will see them top the pile. If they fail to beat the Scots, it would open the door for Gregor Townsend’s men to qualify as runners-up with Ireland then the likely group winners.

Victory there would send South Africa into a semi-final against Wales or France, providing remaining fixtures go by the form book, before taking on New Zealand (or England, fingers crossed) for the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama.
