Counting of votes for 40-member Mizoram Assembly beginsBy uniindia
Aizwal, Dec 11 (UNI) The counting of votes for the 40-member Mizoram Assembly began on Tuesday at 40 halls in 13 centres across the state amid tight security.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made all the necessary arrangements for the poll results.
As per the Election Commission guidelines, postal ballots will be first taken up for counting followed by counting of votes polled into EVMs.
To supervise the counting process, observers and micro-observers have been deployed in all counting centres, a senior Electoral Officer said.
According to deputy Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Lalchhuangkima, all preparations are put in place for counting of votes, polled in 1,179 polling stations on November 28 in a single phase and over 73 per cent of the 7.68 lakh voters exercised their franchise to elect a new Assembly.
Mizoram is the last Congress-ruled state of the eight northeastern states.
While ruling Congress led by the incumbent chief minister and state party chief Lal Thanhawla is aiming for a third consecutive term, it is likely to receive a stiff challenge from the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), headed by Zoramthanga.

Both the parties have fielded candidates in all the 40 Assembly constituencies.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded candidates in 39 seats.
The Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM), an alliance formed by two political parties and four groups, also contested in 35 seats.
In 2013 elections, the Congress had won 34 seats, while its main opposition, the Mizo National Front (MNF), bagged five and the Mizoram People's Conference won one seat.
No party in the state has so far been able to form governments thrice in a row since 1987 when Mizoram became a full-fledged state.
The Congress and the MNF have ruled Mizoram since 1987.
