The man, who had allegedly shot dead a 52-year-old government revenue official in Manesar on Tuesday, has reportedly been identified and a manhunt launched to nab him, police said on Wednesday.

Police said the suspect is a repeat offender who attacked and killed Ishwar Singh, a Patwari.

Singh, a Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) employee, had gone to check alleged land grabbing near Sector 1 in Manesar on Tuesday afternoon. He died after being shot in the head and left shoulder around 1.15pm. A driver who survived with a bullet injury identified five people, including Bhanwar Singh, from Manesar village, who allegedly shot dead Ishwar Singh.

“Bhanwar Singh is a history sheeter, and we are looking into his criminal record,” Rajesh Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (Manesar), said.

“Four teams are working on the case. We have also circulated details of the accused to other police stations,” Shamsher Singh, assistant commissioner of police (crime), said.

A senior police officer said the police questioned a friend of the main suspect on Wednesday evening at Farrukhnagar.

OP Sharma , HSIIDC, additional general manager (Manesar), said the department has given ₹3 lakh as compensation to the next of kin and added that they were looking into other options also.

Singh’s body was handed over to his family members after post-mortem on Wednesday afternoon. “The reason of death is gunshot injury to the temple from a close range. The bullet was stuck in the brain,” Dr Deepak Mathur, who conducted the autopsy, said.

The plot, on which Singh was shot, is part of a 687-acre property being investigated by the CBI. Former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda had been named by the CBI in its chargesheet.

People who had purchased apartments on the disputed land demanded a “high level inquiry into all incidents.
