South Africa 66-7 Canada: Cobus Reinach scores fastest hat-trick in World Cup history as Springboks advanceBy Evening Standard

Cobus Reinach scored an 11-minute hat-trick as South Africa demolished Canada 66-7 to reach the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals in Kobe.

The rampant Springboks ran in 10 tries in total during a thoroughly one-sided Pool B affair, with their opponents reduced to 14 men before the interval after Josh Larsen was dismissed for a dangerous shoulder charge.

The bonus-point victory means that South Africa join England and France in confirming their place in the last eight, though New Zealand will top the group if they beat Italy in Toyota City on Saturday.

Canada were utterly overwhelmed during an embarrassing first half and conceded the first try after just three minutes as centre Damian De Allende - one of only two players to retain their starting berths as coach Rassie Erasmus made 13 changes from Friday's 49-3 defeat of Italy - crossed after a strong carry from lock RG Snyman.

Wing S'Busiso Nkosi made it two tries in six minutes after being released by Kwagga Smith, before Reinach stole the show with a blistering quick-fire treble.

The Northampton Saints scrum-half showed off his searing pace to accelerate through a gap and chip the ball over the head of Jeff Hassler for his first, before he wrapped up the bonus point for the Springboks after selling a dummy to opposite number Phil Mack.

Reinach completed his hat-trick on the 20-minute mark, with wing Warrick Gelant and De Allende combining to tee up the 29-year-old after a perfect cross-field kick from Elton Jantjies, who converted all but two of South Africa's 10 tries for 16 points.

Gelant was the next to touch down for the Springboks, weaving his way through three defenders after the ball was recycled quickly after a dominant scrum.

Wretched Canada tried to hit back as a cross-kick from Peter Nelson almost picked out South Africa-born veteran DTH van der Merwe, who set a new Canadian record on his 15th World Cup appearance,
