Brad Barritt: Don't doubt Saracens stars returning from England dutyBy Evening Standard

Brad Barritt has no doubt about SaracensEngland players after their mentality was called into question following the shock draw against Scotland.

England came under fire after they threw away a 31-0 lead inside 30 minutes to finish 38-38 in their final Six Nations game at Twickenham.

Coach Eddie Jones questioned his players after, including several Saracens stars such as fly-half Owen Farrell and No8 Billy Vunipola, and he plans to hire a sports psychologist ahead of the World Cup later this year.

But Sarries captain Barritt has no concerns about the mentality of the club’s returning England players as they prepare to take on Glasgow Warriors at Allianz Park on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the Champions Cup.

“We know our individuals and we know what drives them,” said Barritt.

“We know that when they pull that Saracens jersey on it is about being the best Saracen you can be. And I have no doubt about the mentality of the players. When you are at the club you are with people you know really well, so we like to think we can get the best out of our individuals when they are in Saracens colours. We are going to have to do that as quick as we can ahead of a big fixture this weekend.”

It promises to be a special atmosphere, with Saracens Women in action after the men in their final regular season game of the Tyrrells Premier 15s. Both have been flying high domestically but Barritt has admitted European success is a priority after they crashed out of the Champions Cup at this stage last season to eventual winners Leinster.

“There were no real excuses to make, we were well beaten,” said Barritt, who captained the club to European glory in 2017. “What it showed us is where we needed to improve. Thankfully as a team we reacted to that setback really well.

“Over the course of the next two months of the Premiership we identified areas of improvement and strove to get better. As the competition went on we were more confident and that has spilled over into this season, and into Europe.”
