Brazil manager Tite has revealed that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi told him to 'shut his mouth' during his side's 1-0 win defeat to Argentina on Friday.

Messi made his return to the national side after serving a three-month suspension for his claims during the Copa America. The 32-year-old netted the all-important goal in the 14th minute to ensure Argentina claimed the bragging rights in Saudi Arabia.

Messi burst into the area and went to ground following a tackle by Juventus' Alex Sandro, with the referee deeming it a foul. The Barcelona man stepped up to take the penalty and tucked home the rebound after it was initially saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

However, Brazil boss Tite was left far from impressed by the Argentine's actions, complaining to the referee. Messi responded to the 58-year-old's attempts to get the referee's attention by putting his finger to his mouth, signalling for him to be quiet - while he was also seen gesturing towards the manager.

After the final whistle, Tite opened up on his discussion with the player during the match.

"I complained because he [Messi] should have been shown a yellow card and he told me to shut my mouth and I told him to shut his mouth," he revealed, as quoted by the Mirror.

"I don't want to answer anymore on it. You need a strong referee because he'll swallow you...it should have been a card, I was right to complain."

The forward's strike came moments after Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus fired wide from the penalty spot, squandering the chance to give his side the lead.

Brazil managed just the solitary shot on target during the match and further to this, Friday's defeat means they have now gone five matches without a win, leaving Tite with plenty to think about before his team take on South Korea on Tuesday.
