The number of coronavirus cases in India rose by 24,879 to 7,67,296 on Thursday, 9 July, in what is the biggest one-day spike till now. Meanwhile, the death toll increased by 487 to 21,129.

According to the Union Health Ministry’s data, there are currently 2,69,789 active cases across the country, while 4,76,377 patients have been cured or discharged, and one has migrated.

Amid rising cases of coronavirus, Uttar Pradesh government announced lockdown from 10 pm on Friday to 5 am on 13 July, ANI reported.

In a media briefing, the ministry on Thursday reiterated that India's COVID-19 deaths and cases per million population, are amongst lowest in the world.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday said that experts have stated there is no community transmission in India. “There may be some localised pockets where transmission is high, but as a country, there's no community transmission in India,” he was quoted by ANI as saying after the Group of Ministers meet on COVID-19.

According to the Union Health Ministry’s data, there are currently 2,69,789 active cases across the country, while 4,76,377 patients have been cured or discharged, and one has migrated.

149 New COVID-19 Cases in Rajasthan, Tally Rises to 22,212

As many as new 149 COVID-19 cases and seven deaths have been reported in Rajasthan, taking the total number of cases in the state to 22,212 and the death toll to 489.

'No Community Transmission in India': Union Health Minister Reiterates

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday said that experts have stated there is no community transmission in India.

“There may be some localised pockets where transmission is high, but as a country, there's no community transmission in India,” he was quoted by ANI as saying after the Group of Ministers meet on COVID-19.

Vardhan also said that while looking at the number of cases in India, it is necessary to see that the country has the second-highest population in the world.

“Our cases per million are 538, while the world average is 1,453,” he pointed out.

"We are the second-most populous country of the world. Despite a population of 1.3 billion people, India has been able to manage COVID-19 relatively well," says Rajesh Bhushan, OSD, Ministry of Health.

"If you look at cases per million population, it still remains amongst lowest in the world," he adds.

"When we talk of case load of COVID-19 in India, it is 2,69,000 people. This tells us that at the end of the day we've managed a situation where our health care infrastructure is not unduly burdened and is not creaking due to the pressure," says Bhushan.

The Ministry also added that 10 percent of India's population (60 years and above) accounts for 53 percent of the country's COVID-19-linked deaths.

6,875 New COVID-19 in Maharashtra

6,875 new COVID-19 positive cases, 219 deaths and 4,067 recovered cases were reported in Maharashtra on Thursday, as per state health authorities.

The total number of positive cases in the state rises to 2,30,599 including 1,27,259 recovered, 93,652 active cases and 9,667 deaths.

UP Government Imposes Lockdown From Friday

Uttar Pradesh Government imposes lockdown in the state from 10 pm on Friday till 5 am on 13 July, reports ANI.

All offices, markets and commercial establishments will remain closed, as per the state order. However, essential services will be allowed, says UP Government.
