Alert Level 2 is now hoisted over Sudan following weeks of civil unrest, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Thursday as it advised all Filipinos not to travel to the said country at this time.

The DFA said Alert Level 2 was officially raised on June 7.

Under Alert Level 2 (Restriction Phase), Filipinos are advised to restrict their movements if there are real threats to the lives, security, and properties due to instability in a particular country.

For those who are in that country where an Alert Level 2 is in effect, they are advised to “restrict non-essential movements, avoid public places, and prepare for evacuation.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will only allow the return of OFWs in that country if they have existing employment contracts and in consideration of other special circumstances.

Filipinos who may need assistance in Sudan may contact the Philippine Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, through telephone numbers (+202) 252-13062 or through its Facebook Page. They may also contact the Philippine Honorary Consul in Khartoum at (+249) 183-468717 or (+249) 183-468716.

The ongoing unrest in Sudan started in December 2018 when long-time President Omar al-Bashir’s government imposed emergency austerity measures in an attempt to fend off economic collapse.

Protests and anger swept over the capital Khartoum over Sudan’s living standards.

In April, the military announced the overthrow of Sudan’s long-time President Omar al-Bashir.
