India, Sept. 23 -- The Standing Committee of the Assembly that visited the Kenpali village in Sohela block of Bargarh district assured the villagers and the family members of the late Khainu Bagarty of all possible help from the State Government.

The committee led by Pramila Mallick comprised of five other MLAs as members, including BJP State president Basanta Panda, visited the village to directly interact with the villagers to know the reasons behind the suicide of poor farmer Khainu in February this year. Khainu due to the continuous crop loss and loan burden had consumed poison on February 26 and died two days later, in the VIMSAR, Burla, while undergoing treatment.

Khainu had raised vegetables in his 2.5 acres of land. But due to the nonfunctioning of the deep bore well, the entire crop was damaged.

"Since he incurred loans for cultivation, he was compelled to commit suicide after the crop loss," villagers and family members had alleged then.

But the district administration denied the allegations and clarified that the suicide of Khainu was due to other reason but not crop failures. However, after severe reactions from the people and the farmers' organizations, the Standing Committee of the Assembly with members from all political parties visited the village for an on-the-spot assessment. Mallick after interactions with the family members assured of all possible help to the deceased family members of Khainu, including his a son, a daughter in law, a grandson and a granddaughter. "We will recommend to the State Government to provide suitable compensation. Their family is really poor and needs assistance," Mallick told.
