Support no-confidence motion, have a drop of Andhra CM's guts, Stalin tells EPSBy IndiaToday

DMK leader MK Stalin on Saturday asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to support a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government. He urged the leader of the AIADMK to to act boldly and seize what he said is an opportune moment.

Two rival Andhra Pradesh parties, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party and the YSR Congress, have already indicated they've lost confidence in the Modi administration. The TDP also left the National Democatic Alliance, a national coalition of parties headed by the BJP.

Palaniswami, Stalin said, should have "at least a drop" of the "anger, feeling, dedication and guts that Chandrababu Naidu has shown."

ANALYSIS | Why TDP's no-confidence motion must have left BJP rattled

Article 75 of the Constitution says the Council of Ministers "shall be collectively responsible to the House of the People," or Lok Sabha. But now, even a motion of no-confidence backed by a united Opposition won't pose a numerical threat to the BJP's majority. It alone has over 270 MPs in a House of 540 lawmakers.

For the Andhra Pradesh parties, the bone of contention was their state's prolonged wait for special category status, a promise made by Manmohan Singh's UPA government. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, there's a demand for the establishment of a Cauvery Water Management Board. The Supreme Court recently reduced Tamil Nadu's share of the river's water.

"The formation of the Cauvery management board is still a question mark and is yet to see the light of day," Stalin said.

The DMK leader also brought up two other contentious issues in Tamil Nadu: the row over NEET and the flight of the state's farmers.

"The PM did not give time to the (state) government...how will he give time for the Opposition? For the farmers issue, for the NEET issue, we had requested the PMs appointment - and when the CM doesn't get an appointment, we don't think we will get one."
