Gio Gonzalez Got Shelled in First Outing as a Yankee

Looks like Gio Gonzalez has yet to completely shake off the cobwebs of a long winter.

With MLB's free agent market essentially gridlocked, many big names are still without a home with Opening Day right around the corner. Gonzalez agreed to a rather minuscule deal with the Yankees last week, at just $3 million in base salary.

In his first outing of the spring, and with just a week to go before the start of the regular season, Gonzalez struggled with his command and gave up four runs in two innings. This included a bomb given up to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Yikes.

Yankee fans are notoriously impatient, but considering Gonzalez is merely a depth rotation option signed in the last week, we hope they can give Gio a pass on this one. New York is dealing with several injuries in their starting rotation, including ailments to CC Sabathia and Luis Severino. This made the signing of Gonzalez a perfect match for both sides, with Gio antsy to find a new team.

At 32 years of age, Gonzalez is just two seasons removed from finishing in the top 10 of the NL Cy Young voting. Last year, Gio was a late-season pickup by the Milwaukee Brewers in their playoff push, and with them he posted a 3-0 record and a 2.13 ERA. If the Yankees can get that sort of production out of Gonzalez, they'll forget all about this little hiccup.
