Senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today said his party is planning to move an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra following serious allegations against him made by the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.

"Looks like the Supreme Court crisis is not resolved yet, so we need to intervene. It's time to play the role of the executive. We are discussing with opposition parties on the possibility of an impeachment motion against the CJI in the Budget session," Yechury said.

Calling it a "very serious matter for democracy" and a "dangerous situation", the senior Left leader said the plan to impeach CJI Misra is being discussed among the opposition parties.

Yechury, who met NCP leader Tariq Anwar and rebel Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav to discuss the issue, said it was time that the legislature and the executive come together to resolve the crisis as the judiciary has been unable to address the issues raised by the four senior apex court judges.

"Anti-BJP parties like the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Samajwadi Party... we all are talking to them. We are trying that in next 2-3 days, we take some decision and move forward," Yechury said.

REVOLT AGAINST CJI

The four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court - Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph - had revolted against CJI Dipak Misra on January 12, raising questions on "selective" case allocation and certain judicial orders at a press conference. The unprecedented development had sent shockwaves across the judiciary and polity.

The CPM leader felt that even though nearly two weeks have passed since the four senior judges raised issues against the CJI, the crisis has not been resolved within the judiciary.

"We want the judges to sort their grudges within them, but as you can see, the CJI is still working in the same way which was pointed by the four judges. This is a very dangerous situation. This is now the responsibility of our government, Parliament and court. All the three need to sort this, and there is only one way: impeachment motion move against the CJI," Yechury said.
