PSG defend fans after weapons and drugs found ahead of Chelsea tie in Women's Champions LeagueBy Evening Standard

Paris Saint Germain have came out in defence of their supporters after weapons were found on a coach carrying fans to Thursday's Women’s Champions League match with Chelsea.

The French club were facing the threat of possible Uefa sanctions following reports which suggested a door at Cherry Red Records stadium in Kingston had been broken and parts of the ground daubed with pro-PSG graffiti. The coach was found to have knives and knuckle-dusters on board, as well as Class A drugs.

Police were called to reports of vandalism at the stadium at 8am, ahead of the 7.05pm kick-off, then later to disorder at Waterloo and Wimbledon stations.

One man from the coach was arrested for possession of Class A drugs and the remaining passengers were escorted from the area by police.

However, PSG this morning came out in defence of their supporters in the wake of the trouble.

“We repeat that the local authorities have provided no evidence of any wrongdoing, or at least no justification as to any sort of gravity that would justify a ban on attending the match,” a statement from the French club read.

“All of our supporters were searched, and if any of these or associated facts had been uncovered within criminal law, we cannot imagine the supporter(s) in question would have been able to leave British territory without issue.

“Surprisingly, we note that Chelsea, on the morning of the game, did not want our fans present, arguing for alleged stadium damage that, according to local testimony, was done prior to our supporters arriving in London.

“We express our fullest support to the PSG fans, who arranged to come in the middle of the week to support our women.”

Despite their statement, PSG face the threat of sanctions and Uefa were today waiting for officials at the game to file their reports from the match

Chelsea, who won the game 2-0, will provide travel guidance for fans travelling to Wednesday’s second leg in Paris.
