Liverpool travel to the Spanish capital to meet Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid tonight.
The match is a repeat of the 2019-20 round-of-16 clash that saw the La Liga side end Liverpool’s hopes of winning back-to-back Champions League titles just days before the first national lockdown in England.
Few will need reminding that Mohamed Salah is in fine fettle ahead of the game and, having scored two stunning goals in as many matches, could have a big influence on proceedings. Indeed, it’s a meeting of the club’s past and present, with Salah up against Luis Suarez, playing against his former employers for only the third time since leaving in 2014.
As things stand in Group B, Liverpool lead the way with two wins from two, although Atletico could go above them with a victiory. The home side have not yet looked entirely convincing so far this season despite winning the league last time out, dropping points in three of their eight league games, though they did manage to beat Barcelona prior to the international break.
Perhaps crucially, the Spanish champions were not in action over the weekend, affording Simeone some time to recover some key players.
