Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the India-China border situation in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, 17 July, and said both nations are respecting their bilateral pacts.

However, he said that though both countries respect the pact and practice restraint, there have been differences along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) from time to time and it is nothing new.

Singh said there is complete restraint by the armed forces of India and China at Doklam, which saw a months long stand-off between in 2017.

Rajnath Singh“India and China are respecting bilateral pacts to ensure peace and tranquillity along the border.”

The Defence Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had decided at the Wuhan summit that peace and tranqullity would be maintained at the border.

Cong Leader in LS Brings Up Reports of Demchok Intrusion

Singh was questioned by Congress’ leader Adhir Ranjan Singh in Lok Sabha on the reports of the alleged intrusion by the Chinese in Ladakh's Demchok sector earlier this month, but he did not respond to the question.

Earlier, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had said that there was no intrusion by the Chinese in Ladakh's Demchok sector.

“There is no intrusion,” Rawat said on the sidelines of an event.

However, slightly varying versions of what exactly took place emerged in the media, with some saying there was indeed intrusion.

In July 2018, Chinese security forces had come 500 metres into Demchok and had set up tents, reports from the previous year had said. A stand-off had also reportedly taken place in the same area in 2014.
