FYJC special merit list today, 57,000 students in the fray for seatsBy Hindustan Times

The much-awaited special merit list for admissions to junior colleges will be announced at 11 am today.

With over 57,000 students from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) yet to secure a seat, the merit list would see tough competition to get into top city colleges.

Over 1 lakh seats, which also includes seats from unfilled quotas of minority colleges, which were surrendered after the centralised admission process (CAP), are up for grabs in the special round.

The special round of applications for admissions was announced by the education department after requests poured in from several parents and students.

With the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court not allowing minority colleges to surrender their quota seats before CAP, many students who wanted to seek admissions to some of the top colleges could not do so with no vacancies left.

With over 58,000 seats across minority colleges left vacant during the CAP rounds, parents asked for yet another merit list in hope of grabbing them once they were surrendered after the centralised admission process.

There were over 17,000 students who were not allotted a college in any of the four merit lists that were declared earlier.

All such students would also have to wait for the special merit list to get a seat.

“Despite scoring 86%, I have still not got a college of my choice. Now, the special merit list is the only hope as I cannot settle for a small college with such a good score,” said Neil Gandhi, a commerce aspirant.

Only those students who have not got any college so far or who have not reported to the college allotted to them would be eligible for the special admission round. Those who have cancelled their previous admissions or who have not secured admissions in the college of their first preference would have to wait for a first come, first serve round which would be announced after the special merit list.
