COVID-19: India’s Case Tally Nears 2 Lakh; 72,300 Cases in MahaBy TheQuint

India's recovery rate stands at 48.07 percent, with 95,527 COVID-19 patients having been cured or discharged, the Health Ministry said in its briefing on Tuesday, 2 June, as India's coronavirus tally surged to over 1.98 lakh with 8,171 new cases in the last 24 hours. The death toll in the country stands at 5,598, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

"The fatality rate in our country is 2.82 percent, one of the lowest in the word," Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said in a briefing on Tuesday, adding that 73 percent of COVID-19 deaths in India are of people with co-morbidities.

Meanwhile, as many as 2,287 new COVID-19 cases and 103 deaths were reported in Maharashtra on Tuesday, taking the tally in the state to 72,300 and death toll to 2,465.

Highest Single-Day Spike in Delhi With 1,298 New Cases

Delhi recorded 1,298 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, making it the highest single-day spike in cases, taking the tally in the national capital to over 22,000. The death toll in the city stands at 556.

415 New COVID-19 Cases in Gujarat

With 415 new COVID-19 cases, Gujarat's tally rose to 17,632 on Tuesday, with the death toll at 1,092, PTI reported.

1,513 COVID-19 Cases in Assam, 324 Discharged

Assam has recorded 1,513 COVID-19 cases so far, including 1,182 active cases, four deaths and 324 patients who have been discharged, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.

"The fatality rate in our country is 2.82 percent, one of the lowest in the word," Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said in a briefing on Tuesday, adding that 73 percent of COVID-19 deaths in India are of people with co-morbidities.

“One in every two COVID-19 deaths in India has been of senior citizens who constitute 10 percent of our total population,” Agarwal said, adding there’s been no under-reporting of COVID-19 deaths in India, with states doing causality assessment and attributing the cause of death accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Tuesday that 1.20 lakh samples are being tested for COVID-19 on an average everyday. "At present, there are 476 government and 205 private labs testing for the virus," an ICMR representative said.

Nivedita Gupta, ICMR, as quoted by ANI“Instead of the use of the word ‘community transmission’, we need to understand the extent of the spread of the disease. We are far from the peak. Our measures to curtail the disease are effective. India has been very good in the reduction in mortality.”

'Four Steps Ahead of Coronavirus': Arvind Kejriwal

"We are four steps ahead of coronavirus. Cases of coronavirus are increasing in Delhi but we have made all the arrangements for beds, ICUs and ventilators," ANI quoted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as saying.

"However, there have been instances where people are complaining of shortage of beds and medical facilities, so clearly there is gap in information as even today around 4100 beds are still vacant," he added.

Total 675 COVID Cases in Jharkhand

"Till date, 675 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Jharkhand including 296 recoveries, 374 active cases and 5 deaths," ANI quoted State Health Department as saying.

Over 8,000 Cases in One Day

One more time, India records over 8,000 cases in 24 hours. The total number of cases reaches 1,98,706, according to the Union Health Ministry. Active cases toll is at 97,581.

Global COVID-19 Tally Over 62 Lakh

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the world, as of the morning of Tuesday, 2 June, reached 62,65,496 according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

Global death tally stood at 3,75,526.
