Tropical depression “Ferdie” is already outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday morning but the southwest monsoon or “habagat” will persist, triggering rains over most parts of Luzon within the next 24 hours.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said rainy weather due to the cyclone-enhanced southwest monsoon is expected over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, and Bataan.

Occasional monsoon rains will also prevail over Metro Manila, Batanes, Cagayan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, Aurora, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac.

“Flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards,” PAGASA warned.

It advised the public and local disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to monitor rainfall or thunderstorm advisories and heavy rainfall warnings from PAGASA’s regional services divisions for necessary precautionary measures.

Strong gusts of wind will also be felt in Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, especially in the coastal or mountainous communities of these areas.

A gale warning remains in effect on Monday over the seaboards of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, western coast of Batangas, western coast of Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, Calamian Islands, Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, and Isabela due to rough to very rough sea conditions.

Fisherfolk and those using small boats should not set sail over these seas, PAGASA advised.

Meanwhile, those venturing out over the coasts of Visayas and the rest of Luzon were advised to take precautionary measures due to moderate to rough sea conditions.

PAGASA has monitored three cyclones near the Philippines but are all outside the PAR as of mid-Monday.

“Ferdie” was at 265 kilometers (km) west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte or at 315 km west of Calayan, Cagayan.

A tropical storm with the international name “Jangmi” was estimated at 1,510 km north-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon. “Jangmi” was locally called “Enteng” before it left the PAR last Sunday.

Another tropical depression was spotted at 2,515 km east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon but PAGASA said it is unlikely to enter the country’s area of responsibility.

Visayas and Mindanao will continue to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies but chances of rain showers in the afternoon or evening remain high due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA weather specialist Chris Perez said areas affected by monsoon rains can expect a gradual improvement in weather conditions on Wednesday.
